12 Hours, 12 Miles, One Inspiring OCR Athlete.

We’ve been constantly inspired by Flynn since he started training with us. We love seeing the younger generation coming into OCR and Flynn is so dedicated to his training and focus he puts most adults to shame! Recently Flynn took on an impressive challenge and we wanted to let him share his experience with you.

Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Flynn Stewart. I am an 11-year-old Competitive Obstacle Course Racer with The OCR Boys and Team Grit OCR. I ran my first OCR when I was 4 years old but started taking the sport more seriously a few months before my 8th birthday. I am very active and take part in a multitude of sports namely: swimming, football, running, triathlon. I also have weekly 1:1 strength and conditioning and obstacle race personal training sessions which I really enjoy.

What was the challenge you set yourself and where did the idea come from?
I was asked by my running coach, Chris Ford, founder of Fordy Runners if I wanted to take part in an event to raise funds for Transitions UK. The original plan was for Juniors to run as part of a relay completing a mile every hour for 12 hours. However, Chris approached me and asked if I would like to tackle the entire 12 hours as a solo runner which I agreed to.

How did you prepare for it?
I sat down with my dad, and we broke down the event into 1-hour slots to target. We also discussed how we tackle each mile from running flat out, to jogging and supporting younger runners. I wasn’t concerned about the distance, more the mental side of running every hour.

How did it go on the day?
Really well if the truth be told, absolutely smashed it raising £304 for Transitions UK which I am delighted about.

What was the hardest thing about it?
Nothing to be honest as there was so much support for the adult Fordy Runners and Chris was always cracking jokes. Between each run I was able to play football in the park with my friends. Before each lap, my dad would take me aside and remind me it’s just 1 mile at a time.

What did you enjoy the most?
Completing the final mile with all the Fordy Runners was awesome. I was also able to support and encourage Alannah on her first mile. Alannah (6) trains with me at Fordy Juniors on Thursday and I will often run around encouraging her to keep going.

What (if anything) would you change if you did it again?
I would have to say none of it, it was such fun.

What’s next?
Nuclear Rookies Competitive Wave, Junior Spartan Competitive Wave at Marston Lodge are my next two races in July. If restrictions allow, I hope to race in the Czech Republic Competitive 3 Race Series. There are a couple of competitive kids in Europe that I am eager to go up against. And if all goes well representing the UK at the Junior Spartan World Championship in Abu Dhabi in December.

What would you say to other young people who might be considering trying OCR?
I would say give it a go because it is so much fun and you will love it. The OCR community is so welcoming. There are plenty of kids races to try including Military Mud Run, my favourite event, Junior Spartan, and Nuclear Rookies to name but a few. There are also lots of obstacle play parks to try all sorts of obstacles such as PT Barn, Body Hub Fitness, Wild Forrest, Obstacle Training Ground, Obstacle Play Park, Rumble Fitness and The Playground. You do not have to be an expert at obstacles just a willingness to get stuck in and have fun.
